Tear Strength - ISO 34-1
The force required to tear a specified test specimen divided by the specimen thickness.
This test provides a measure of resistance to tearing. Tear strength may also be used to illustrate the anisotropy of a material.
Testing is performed by pulling specimens apart using a tensile test machine. Three methods are employed. Method A is preferred because it is not sensitive to the length of the cut in the specimen and test resuts are more easily related to the tear properties of the material. Method B (unnicked) measures a combination of tear initiation and propagation. Method B (nicked) and Method C each measure tear propagation.
