Tensile Properties of Rubber/Elastomers - ASTM D412

This standard covers a variety of tensile properties for rubber and elastomeric materials. Testing is performed on either dumbbell, straight, or cut ring specimens.

Method Specimens Covered
A Dumbbell and Straight Specimens (Types A-F)
B Cut Ring Specimen (Types 1 and 2)
Term Definition
Elongation at Break Tensile elongation corresponding to the point of rupture.
Tensile Strength at Break Tensile stress corresponding to the point of rupture.
Elongation Set after Break Tensile elongation remaining after specimen breaks. Elongation is measured by putting the broken specimen back together and measuring its length.
Yield point The point on the stress-strain curve, where the slope of the curve becomes zero.
Elongation at Yield Tensile elongation corresponding to the yield point.
Tensile Strength at Yield Tensile stress corresponding to the yield point.
Tensile Set The tensile elongation remaining after a specimen has been stretched and allowed to relax in a controlled manner.
Tensile Stress at 20% Tensile stress at 20% elongation. Also known as "20% Modulus"
Tensile Stress at 50% Tensile stress at 50% elongation. Also known as "50% Modulus"
Tensile Stress at 100% Tensile stress at 100% elongation. Also known as "100% Modulus"
Tensile Stress at 200% Tensile stress at 200% elongation. Also known as "200% Modulus"
Tensile Stress at 300% Tensile stress at 300% elongation. Also known as "300% Modulus"
Tensile Stress at 500% Tensile stress at 500% elongation. Also known as "500% Modulus"
